Fleury among players exposed for Vegas NHL expansion draft

The Knights will select one player from each of the 30 teams.

Fans will get a treat on Sunday, as 10 a.m. ET stands as the deadline for the league to "approve and simultaneously distribute" said protected lists.

McPhee's message to teams Sunday was: "You can negotiate your way out of this if you wish".

As this lost season drags on, and even the ice grows exhausted of the Edmonton Oilers skating on it, I'm noticing more goals against where the entire Oilers team just doesn't look sharp.

National Hockey League teams have two options for the expansion draft: protect eight skaters and a goalie, or protect seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie.

If the Knights sign an unprotected RFA or UFA after the protected lists come out, that would count as a team's expansion player and they would not lose another in the draft.

Francis didn't say what his plans might be, saying, "We'll just see where we are and what happens" in the expansion draft. Friday, June 16: Deadline to place a player on waivers before the Expansion Draft roster freeze.

From Saturday afternoon through Thursday morning, after Vegas makes its picks, the rest of the teams can't make trades with each other.

Among those left unprotected, and available to the Golden Knights in the draft, were goalies Cam Ward and Eddie Lack, forwards Lee Stempniak and Joakim Nordstrom, and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck. The fifth-year player, however, won't be ready for the start of the season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

The Predators were put in a bind in being forced to expose Neal, a 10-time 20-goal-scorer, because they elected to protect a fourth defenseman.

So for the next few days, McPhee will not only be identifying the best talent available, he'll also be burning up the phone lines trying to turn teams' desperation into an even bigger gain for him. Aside from Fleury, other goalies available are Florida's Roberto Luongo, Detroit's Petr Mrazek and Philadelphia's Michal Neuvirth. The Flames would be thrilled if McPhee assumed the final three years of Brouwer's contract, worth $4.5 per season, and likely would be willing to sweeten the pot in an effort to part ways with him. The Golden Knight can't select 10 goalies because they're required to use up 26 of their 30 picks in filling 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalie spots. The Thunderbirds have signed the following seven players to AHL one-way deals: forwards Francois Beauchemin, Matt Buckles, Ryan Horvat and Anthony Greco; defensemen Matt MacKenzie and Ed Wittchow; and goaltender Evan Cowley.

The Hawks would protect Jurco as their seventh forward because they want to shed the contract of Kruger, who carries an approximate $3.1 million cap hit the next two seasons. The Wild have too many defensemen, so Jonas Brodin's name has been bandied about in trade rumors, and the Ottawa Senators will have to do something because defenseman Dion Phaneuf said he won't waive his no-movement clause.

His appeal: Though he fell off offensively with a dip in luck this past year (24 points) and underlying numbers suggest he's slightly overexposed in a top pairing role, Vatanen remains an effective puck mover and transporter and helpful power play asset.
