AAA predicts 51 million travelers this Thanksgiving, highest volume since 2005

Some 45.5 million US road-trippers will set off to grandma's house and other destinations during the Thanksgiving

AAA: More than 1.6 million Michiganders will celebrate Thanksgiving with holiday getaway

That marks a 3.4 percent increase from a year ago, which AAA calls a good indicator of a strong economy and high consumer confidence.

According to AAA, of those traveling to see family and friends during Thanksgiving, about 2.3 million Floridians will get there via road trip. That despite gas prices which are 60 to 70 cents per gallon higher this year than last.

A new report by Hertz shows that Orlando International Airport will be among the busiest airport pick-up locations for rental cars. The majority of traveling Floridians are expected to take to the highways, despite gasoline prices that are expected to be the highest since 2014, AAA said.

"Most people have already made their travel plans, and will not cancel them for moderate shifts in gas prices", Jenkins said. The numbers have been increasing every year since.

The number of Marylanders flying for Thanksgiving is expected to grow by 4.7 percent, the largest increase of any mode of transportation. The U.S. average price is $2.56, compared to $2.15 a year ago.

Nationally, AAA predicts that 50.9 million Americans will take a trip at least 50 miles away from home during next week's holiday, a 3.3 percent increase from 2016 and the highest number of Thanksgiving travelers since 2005.

Holiday high: auto rental daily rates will hit a five-year holiday high at $70/day, which may be due to an increase in domestic demand and cost of newer vehicles. "And should help fuel consumer spending and generate a strong finish for the travel industry this year". The average price at AAA Three Diamond rated accommodations has jumped 14 percent to $176 per night, although rates at Two Diamond rates hotels are down 5 percent to $117. Nationally, Anaheim, site of the Disneyland Resort, is expected to be the second most popular Thanksgiving destination, according to the AAA.
