Florida State refutes report that team isn't bowl eligible

Florida State, who holds the longest active streak of making a bowl game in college football with 35 consecutive appearances, should have been watching from home this holiday season.

Sweat paced FSU in sacks with 5.5 and had 56 tackles. The Blazers can also run the ball quite effectively as they're 37th nationally (190.3 ypg); that plays right into the MAC school's strength, however, as the Bobcats are 11th in stopping the run (111.4 ypg).

The report focuses on Florida State's 77-6 win over FCS team Delaware State on November 18.

Neither the Seminoles, ACC or NCAA noticed this, and the Independence Bowl extended an invitation to FSU.

"We're focused on this football team and being the best Florida state football team we can be", interim coach Odell Haggins said after Thursday's practice.

Given that we're less than a week away from the Independence Bowl between Florida State and Southern Miss, even Reddit acknowledges that nothing significant is likely to come of this report in terms of the Seminoles actually not playing in the game. For a win over an FCS team to be countable toward bowl eligibility, that school has to have awarded at least 90 percent of potential scholarships to players.

Delaware State handed over scholarship data to /r/CFB and after crunching the numbers, they found "the average of of grants-in-aid per year in football during a rolling two-year period is 54.815".

But Independence Bowl game officials still expect FSU to face Southern Miss on Wednesday. The NCAA has a waiver process for bowl eligibility and an issue like this could have been sorted out, likely in the Seminoles favor, had it been discovered sooner.

As of Friday afternoon, none of Florida State, Delaware State, the Atlantic Coast Conference or the NCAA had responded to requests for comment.

USM head coach Jay Hopson also didn't seem to anxious about the development. He said only Wisconsin asked for verification of the numbers and that was done with a simple letter stating UNI was in compliance.

"I think the fit is more important than the guys and what they know, because they can know a lot and they don't fit, and it just messes everything up". We've got to be prepared.
