Christmas tree recycling has officially started in Central Virginia, here's a list of area recycling locations.

Baltimore County collectors will pick up Christmas trees in standard trash/recycling trucks, and deliver them to county facilities to be chipped and later used as mulch.

The City of Grand Island Utility Line Division will be recycling Christmas trees starting Wednesday and continue through Monday, Jan. 8.

Trees will be accepted in Marion until January 16 at Ray Fosse Park in the "Goofy Golf" parking lot behind the pool at 519 Parrish Ave. and at the northernmost picnic shelter parking lot in Pyramid Park at 1300 Bevabeck Drive.

The City of Wilmington will offer tree pickup with regularly scheduled trash services.

The county says in a press release that since the program began, an average of 2,300 trees have been collected annually, yielding over 110 cubic yards of mulch each year.

Most US Christmas tree farms are situated in the foothill elevations of OR and North Carolina, and over half of those grown in the two states come from just six counties - two in North Carolina and four in Oregon.

People are asked to remove anything that isn't natural from the tree, including lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails and tree stands.
