Emotional moment as Lindsay Vonn is asked about grandfather

This Olympics provides such a stage for Vonn, who is skiing as well as she has since the last Olympics - which she missed with a bad knee.

"I'm coming in on a hot streak", the 33-year-old said.

Pyeongchang's relatively benign downhill and super-G courses will favour skiers with natural ability and punish those trying to make up time with risky maneuvers, former Olympic champion Bode Miller told Reuters this week.

CNN's Cody Wire asked the Colorado skier how memories of her grandfather resonated with her now that she is in South Korea getting ready for the games.

"I really want to put an exclamation point on my career".

"I would like to compete in everything but I'm not sure if I'm going to have the energy to do that", she said.

"And I really hoped he'd be alive to see me but I know he's watching and I know that he's going to help me. And".

She paused before adding: "Yeah, I just want so badly to do well for him and".

"I'm not going to be nervous, I know he's looking out for me and that gives me some peace of mind".

"And I know it's a comparison between sports and I don't think there's a sport in the Winter Olympics where you can win 23 medals across three or four Olympics".

It's fitting that the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Opening night featured a quick interview with Vonn, and then cut to a more in-depth exclusive sit down with Shiffrin tonight.

He was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was being held under a $100,000 bond, a report said. He added that Moore had occasionally visited the family in Detroit and that the girls had visited him in Alabama.

"And I think that I needed to change something".

"She's usually in the hotel room whenever I'm racing", Vonn said.

Until Vonn gets her Darcy it's just her and Lucy, the latest edition to her growing coterie of rescue dogs.

Even donned the gloves for her flight to South Korea.

"Because of the schedule and because it's my last Olympics, it's very important to me to attend", she said, "and I'm going to get as much of the Olympic experience in these next two weeks as possible".

She has won 10 of 23 World Cup races she entered this season - including five slalom victories and two in giant slaloms, her best two disciplines - and went 5-for-5 from January 1-9.

"I've always been in awe of the Olympics, especially 2002", she said. She has skied through personal strife and physical disaster. With all Vonn's travails - she figures, given all her injuries, she has spent three complete years in rehab - it was easy to downplay her potential impact here. I got Lucy, she travels with me everywhere. Before Vonn headed back onto the World Cup circuit last fall, she made what has become an annual sojourn back to their simple house, where she sleeps on a house in the basement.

This time, Vonn is taking a different approach.

"You're insane", Shiffrin replied.

Vonn said her increased mental strength really comes into play when she's in the starting gate.
