Citing sources familiar with Kushner's relationship with Salman, The Washington Post reported that they began their friendship at a lunch meeting at the White House past year. Giving details of the already concluded deals of worth $12.5 billion, Trump pampered MBS saying "This is pea-nut for you".

President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised USA defence sales to Saudi Arabia as a boost to American jobs, even as lawmakers criticised Riyadh's role in the war in Yemen where a humanitarian crisis has unfolded.

Trump's focus on Saudi purchases of US military equipment came amid a bipartisan effort to limit the United States' role in Yemen's civil war and protests in several USA cities over the Saudi-led invasion, which has contributed to a humanitarian crisis.

Tuesday's visit is not the first time MBS has visited the White House.

As they talked, U.S. senators debated a resolution seeking an end to United States support for Saudi Arabia's campaign in Yemen's civil war.

MBS' trip to the United States is also a pseudo-goodwill tour, with the Saudi leader looking to sell the country's education, business and political leaders on his vision for a country that he hopes to modernize in the coming years. He has allowed women to drive and opened movie theaters shuttered since the 1980s, advocating a more moderate brand of Islam than that which has dominated Saudi life for the last four decades. Now, he is visiting Washington after consolidating his position as heir apparent of Saudi Arabia. Last year, more than 150 high-level princes, ministers, military officials and businessmen were abruptly rounded up and detained at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. The hotel was also where Trump was granted a king's welcome when he visited the country.

He is on a public relations blitz while travelling in the United States, with stops in New York, Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston.
