Himachal school bus accident: 27 kids, 3 others killed in Nurpur; updates

From 2005 till 2015, Himachal Pradesh witnessed in total around 29,555 road accidents across the state.

Up to 30 people were killed, including 24 children, in a school bus accident in the mountainous region of India on Monday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as 26 school children, one driver and three teacher.While 13 died on the spot, the rest succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.The impact of accident left many with severe injuries who died on the way to hospital.

A report by IANS said that they were returning home from school when their bus fell into the gorge near Gurchal village on the Nurpur-Chamba road, about 300 kilometre from the state capital. Twelve injured passengers were rushed to the hospital and are in critical condition.

"My first priority was to save lives".

The reasons behind the accident are not yet clear, according to an official statement.

According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was anguished by the loss of lives in the latest incident.
