Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Sunday that coach Steve Komphela had resigned after a South African FA Cup semi-final loss in Durban triggered crowd violence.Club official Bobby Motaung told reporters: "The coach is stepping down with immediate effect".

Malawian football legend Patrick Mabedi has been assigned with the role to manage South African Premier Soccer League side Kaizer Chiefs until the end of the season.

Seats were ripped out of the stands and even fires were lit, and video footage on social media have emerged of one particular unsavoury incident in which a security guard was repeatedly kicked and hit with chairs by fans.

Police said Sunday that two people had been arrested and more arrests were imminent following the mayhem at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the east coast city of Durban. A man then twice kicked him in the head.

Kaizer Chiefs's Vino Maphosa says that while they will be launching a probe into the riot internally, the police are definitely investigating the assault of a security guard on the field.

The female security guard was caught on camera being badly beaten during the violence on the field.

In a statement on Monday, Chiefs said they were appealing to those people involved in the deplorable episode who claim to be their fans to stop this hooliganism immediately.

City Dominate PFA Team of the Season
Right-back Kyle Walker , centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, midfielder David Silva and striker Sergio Aguero were also named in the XI. Only a week prior, City had a golden opportunity to confirm themselves as champions by beating United at the Etihad.

Stadium authorities said 18 people were injured in the riot, five of whom were taken to hospital.

Speaking outside court, Jojisa's sister Nomaswazi said it was unfair that her brother was the only one arrested.

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela announced his resignation with immediate effect afterwards, ending his almost two-and-a-half year tenure without any major titles.

Kaizer Chiefs are among the best-supported clubs in South Africa but have failed to win a piece of silverware in each of the last three seasons.

"Hooliganism and thuggery of this nature has no place in football, and acts of violence perpetrated by individuals last night can not be tolerated".

Moses Mabhida Stadium was opened in 2009 and was a central venue during the 2010 World Cup.
