The chairman, senate committee on police affairs, Abu Ibrahim, informed the senate that the IGP was in Bauchi and could not honour the invitation of the senate.

Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mpape, has ordered that Samuel Melaye, a brother to the embattled Senator representing Kogi West, Dino, and three others, should be remanded in Kuje Prison.

He was on Wednesday summoned by the upper chamber to appear before it on Thursday to explain why insecurity persisted in the country.

Briefing the Senate about the visit, Na'Allah said the police and the hospital had not fed Melaye since they arrested him for fear of being implicated.

The Senate, on Wednesday, adjourned plenary and summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris over the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye. "That's not disrespect to me as an individual but this institution", he said.

In a brief remark at the end of the short plenary session, Saraki expressed disappointment at the attitude of security agencies towards security issues in the country.

Seconding the motion, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, stated that "coercion can not work", stressing that it was not the way things should be done.

Saraki said Melaye's ordeal is an attack on the Senate and called on those in authorities to follow the rule of law.

However, only Saraki and eight other senators were allowed to see Melaye on his sick bed at the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital while the rest waited outside for want of space. It is also important to state that according to the constitution and the Electoral Act the petition would only be said to have been verified if at least 50 percent plus one of the signatures or thumbprints of the registered voters in the constituency are verified.

He went further to list the names of his family members whom he said had been arrested by the police.

Police, however, trailed him to the location and moved him to the national hospital in Abuja.

It says that Mr Melaye jumped through the window and escaped with his accomplices. He has not eaten for the past 24 hours. I think the issue is how we get him out of the situation he is in.
