Mike Pompeo paves the way in Pyongyang for Trump-Kim summit

A historic meeting with the South, halting long-range missile tests and now the release of three American prisoners.

"Though we're not quite back home yet, I welcomed them back", he said, recounting his first words with the men after they were freed. "In order to hedge against this eventuality, Kim Jong Un met Xi Jinping twice to obtain a firmer security guarantee from China before he enters a deal with the United States".

But the United States president´s decision Tuesday to pull Washington out of the 2015 accord with Teheran has rattled experts, who say it undermines the image of Washington as a reliable treaty partner.

Kim is a former professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology in China, close to the Korean border.

Two months later, North Korea announced it would send athletes to the Winter Olympics in neighbouring South Korea and so began the charm offensive of 2018.

The three Americans will be personally greeted by Trump upon their arrival in Washington on Thursday morning. Pompeo also traveled home accompanied by three American detainees who had been held by North Korea.

The release gave Trump a chance to tout a diplomatic achievement just a day after his decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal drew heavy criticism from European allies and others. Two, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-song, were taken hostage a year ago - when Trump was president.

Kim Jong-un said he accepted a U.S. proposal to grant the three detainees an amnesty, adding that his meeting with President Trump would be an "excellent first step" towards improving the situation on the Korean peninsula, according to the North Korean state news agency KCNA.
