According to a law enforcement official, the criminal sex act charge stems from a 2004 encounter between Weinstein and Lucia Evans. Weinstein was expected to be charged at least with criminal sexual act, a crime that carries up to 25 years in prison, the officials said.

Mr Weinstein turned himself in to police in the city earlier in the day.

The New York Police Department disclosed the charges Friday after the movie mogul turned himself in. Now, could he still use means to say, settle out charges privately with women to evade further accountability.

"My job is to defend something that is criminal behavior", he said. Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

Police detectives set up a sting where the woman recorded herself confronting Weinstein.

In his NY offices, Weinstein "put my hand on his crotch", then chased her to the elevator and kissed her in front of his staff, she claimed. He didn't answer respond to shouts of his name.

"We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorized by his vast network of complicity". The film producer hired private security agencies to collect information on the women and the journalists trying to expose what he had done.

The 66-year-old gave a weak smile as he arrived at a Lower Manhattan police station at about 7.25am local time on Friday wearing a dark jacket over a blue sweater and white open-collared shirt and dark jeans.

Evans told The New Yorker in a story published in October that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex during a daytime meeting at his New York office in 2004, the summer before her senior year at Middlebury College. And she prays that the charges will stick. Weinstein's denied having nonconsensual sex.
