Voters cast ballots in eight USA states for key primary elections on Tuesday, with all eyes on California, where the outcome could swing the balance of power in Congress. Democrats in the country's most populous state are battling to ensure they come out on top in several congressional districts that voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats' dreams of taking both of the top two primary positions may be dashed by a late surge by Trump-backed John Cox, a San Diego businessman running as a Republican.

No state will be more consequential in the success or failure of a prospective blue wave this fall.

California gubernatorial candidate John Cox on his campaign for California governor and his agenda if elected.

In the race for governor, Cox defeated Villaraigosa, who was an early favorite to advance but trailed in recent months despite more than $20 million in spending on his behalf by charter school advocates. "Republicans feel that way in California about a liberal state that's getting crazier and more liberal". Tuesday's special election was the first time voters have gone to the polls in Missouri since Republican Gov. Eric Greitens resigned in disgrace amid a series of scandals. Neither party immediately appeared to suffer major setbacks.

The idea was that by opening up primaries to all voters, regardless of party, a flood of new centrist voters would arrive. He can win. Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible. "Remember, Dems are High Tax, High Crime, easy to beat!"

Results from Tuesday's elections are in. But experts said recalls are politically and financially expensive and usually require unique circumstances like those that made Democratic state Sen.

Republican Rep. Mimi Walters easily advanced to the November election in her Orange County district that has been targeted by Democrats.

One obvious measure of her influence was the number of counterfeit Kate Spade bags one could find on the streets, Arrington said . Bryce Dallas Howard, who served as a brand ambassador for Kate Spade in 2011, described how she was inspired by Spade.

The race is one of hundreds of contests across the state that could solidify Democratic dominance and reshape the fight for control of the U.S. Congress. Democrats need to pick up 23 seats nationwide to retake the House of Representatives.

Cox noted Newsom's campaign strategy that appeared aimed at advancing a Republican to the November ballot in hopes of eliminating competition between Democrats and assuring him of victory.

Sherrill will take on the Republican state Assemblyman Jay Webber in one of several New Jersey races Democrats view as possible pickups.

Feinstein is seeking another six-year term at age 84 and is expected to cruise into November when her likely opponent will be fellow Democrat Kevin de Leon, the former state Senate leader.

In two other races - GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher's 48th District and Rep. Jeff Denham's 10th District - Democrats led for the second spot in the general election, but the races were too close to call.

Roby was the first member of Congress to withdraw her endorsement of the Republican president in 2016 after he was caught on video bragging about grabbing women's genitals.

They advanced candidates in key races in California (after being concerned they could be shut out), put forward what party operatives see as the best candidates in suburban New Jersey, and they feel good about their candidates who won in New Mexico and Iowa. If Grisham wins, she'll be the second Latina to become the state's executive, after Martinez.

Haaland said in her primary victory statement: "Donald Trump and the billionaire class should consider this victory a warning shot: the blue wave is coming".

Tuesday's drama extends into South Dakota, where Rep. Kristi Noem's bid to become the state GOP's first female nominee for governor has opened the state's only House seat. "They were separated by about 286,000 votes". Menendez probably won't put the seat at risk for the Democrats in November - one recent poll shows a close general election race there, but two others don't - but with another Democratic nominee who didn't have Menendez's baggage, the seat would be nearly certain to remain blue.
