The deputies were transporting two inmates to court for a hearing when they were "overcome", according to Lt. Kelli Bailiff with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.

One Kansas sheriff's deputy was killed and another is in critical condition following a shooting near a courthouse in Kansas City on Friday.
"It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot", Bailiff said during a press conference at the University of Kansas Hospital, via the Kansas City Star.
The wounded deputy, who is female, was in critical condition, Bailiff said.
One of them said he heard gunfire, looked outside, and heard a woman screaming that her husband had been shot.
Police have shot and killed two men who authorities say were fighting over a golf cart and a gun in a public square in downtown Kansas City. A male deputy died from his injuries.

The shooting occurred outside the courthouse annex, near the area where inmates are transported.

He said the shooting suspect was critically injured in the shooting and is now in surgery. "We will be looking at that video", he said.

"This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, who is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474- TIPS (8477)", the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said. Details of what led to the shooting were not immediately available.
