Armed Gunman Surrenders To LAPD After Taking Hostages At Trader Joe's

Los Angeles supermarket incident Gunman holds hostages in supermarket arrested

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted there was an “active incident” at a Trader Joe’s in the Silver Lake area

Outside the store, the man exchanged gunfire with police again and the woman was shot and killed, Moore said. A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department document lists Atkins as being born on January 12, 1990.

Melyda Corado, a store manager, was killed by the gunman inside the store, authorities told the Times, though it is not clear what the circumstances were that led to her death. Her brother, Albert Corado, said on Twitter that she worked at Trader Joe's. "My baby sister. My world", he tweeted.

Atkins is in custody charged with murder after the Saturday violence in Los Angeles. The grandmother was reported Saturday to be in critical condition after surgery.

On Saturday, Gene Evin Atkins, 28, argued with his grandmother about his girlfriend staying at his grandma's South Los Angeles house.

A report by Los Angeles television news station KABC said that Corado may have been shot in a crossfire as police and the suspect exchanged gunfire, after Atkins crashed a Toyota Camry into a light pole outside the supermarket and escaped on foot inside the Trader Joe's, where he held an estimated 40 people hostage at gunpoint, according to the multiple media reports.

Around 1:30 p.m., police spotted the suspect driving his grandmother's vehicle in the Hollywood area and a pursuit began.

Customers ran out of the store when the armed man burst in.

According to the Associated Press, "Police believe a man involved in a standoff with officers at a Los Angeles supermarket shot his grandmother and girlfriend before firing at officers during a pursuit, then crashing outside the supermarket and running inside the store".
