In 1974, about 14 years before the Union government's Sarkaria Commission studied Centre-state relations, the DMK government under Karunanidhi passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on state autonomy based on the recommendations of the Rajamannar Committee.
As per official reports, all the government functions and cinema shows in Tamil Nadu that were scheduled on August 7 and August 8 in the state were cancelled.
"With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 6.10 pm".
Karunanidhi, 94, was admitted to the hospital on July 28 and his condition worsened on Monday.
Popularly known as "Kalaignar" - the artist - Karunanidhi was one of the tallest leaders in Indian politics, one of the stewards of the Dravidian self-respect movement, and at the same time, an important contributor to Tamil popular culture.

After assuming the reins of the government, Karunanidhi became the DMK chief in July 1969, a post that he held till death.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately tweeted condolences to Karunanidhi's family, saying "India and particularly Tamil Nadu will miss him immensely". The movie did not just have an enormous impact on Tamil cinema, but also enormously influenced Tamil Nadu's political scene.
When C.N. Annadurai broke away from Periyar's Dravida Kazhagam to start the DMK in 1949, Karunanidhi joined him.
In 1961, he was made treasurer of the DMK and deputy leader of the opposition when the party made its debut in the state assembly the following year. The state government has presently allotted a place near Gandhi Mandapam for DMK patriarch Karunanidhi's burial.
He introduced many social welfare measures, particularly for the poor, and played a huge role in converting Tamil Nadu into one of India's more prosperous states.
Former chief minister M G Ramachandran and his protegee J Jayalalitha were buried at the Marina beach and memorials to them were erected there.
