Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that the Trump administration wants a new "Space Force" ready for battle by the year 2020 - charging that Russia, China, North Korea and Iran have already militarized the final frontier and that the USA needs to catch up.

"Creating a new branch of the military is not a simple process", Pence noted.
On Thursday, Pence said that the administration will work with Congress on the plan, and will outline a budget next year. Now such issues largely fall under the Air Force.
A new Space Operations Force will train, promote, and retain personnel to include engineers, scientists, intelligence experts, operators, strategists, and others. "This report reviews the national security space activities within the Department of Defense, and it identifies concrete steps that our administration will take to lay the foundation for a new department of the Space Force".

For years, some members of Congress and military leaders have been warning that space is no longer a peaceful sanctuary, but a war fighting domain that needs more attention and resources. "In fact, China claimed to make its first successful test of a hypersonic vehicle just last week". This will be an "elite group of joint war fighters specializing in the domain of space", and it will draw its ranks from men and women from across the military, according to Pence.
