With director Judd Apatow, comedian John Mulaney, actor Jim Carrey, and musician Jack Antonoff all announcing they had withdrawn from their participation in the festival over Bannon's inclusion.

In the end, Remnick bowed to the pressure, which he admitted in his statement also came from members of his own staff at The New Yorker and uninvited Bannon to the festival, which is scheduled to kick off on Friday, Oct. 5.

Bannon, the founder of Brietbart and former chief strategist of Donald Trump, is set to speak with New Yorker editor David Remnick at an event titled, "The Ideology of Trumpism", on October 5th.

Remnick, who was going to interview Bannon on stage at the festival, explained his decision to invite and then disinvite Bannon in a statement. I hope the New Yorker will do the right thing and cancel the Steve Bannon event. But this isn't James Baldwin vs William F Buckley.

"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered", Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced Trump and his administration, wrote of his decision on Bannon. The New Yorker just needed to ignore Bannon, and not offer him a platform in the first place. Bridget Everett tweeted that she's out if Bannon is in, Jimmy Fallon simply wrote "I'm Out", and Mike Birbiglia and Bo Burnham also let it be known that they would not participate.

'This is PT Barnum level horse***t.

The announcement did not go over well.

"The New Yorker has been my holy grail for the whole of my writing life".

Now, I'm under no illusion that a tough interview with David Remnick would change Steve Bannon's mind, but I am of the opinion that more understanding about the world is always better than less.

By Monday evening, Remnick informed staff that Bannon would no longer attend.

"I would ask the New Yorker to consider in the future that participants in the festival deserve to make a choice to appear alongside someone this hateful", he wrote.

Author Roxane Gay offered an unvarnished view on Twitter: Inviting Bannon "demonstrates how the intellectual class doesn't truly understand racism or xenophobia".
