Swells generated by Isaac are affecting portions of the Lesser Antilles. "It's just not anywhere near a level of Maria", forecaster Eric Blake said.
Mandatory evacuation orders were in effect for much of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia as Category 3 Hurricane Florence bore down on the states.
"It's just extremely busy and it's even busier than past year and all at once", Blake said.
There were two other systems in development Wednesday as well. "It's a nasty interplay that makes it very hard".
Interestingly, the Atlantic Ocean housed three hurricanes at the same time, that before Tropical Storm Isaac being downgraded from its former hurricane status. The forecast was complicated because the storm was still small, allowing it to quickly change. Then Florence is expected to move to the northwest toward Columbia, SC on Saturday, weakening as it does so, before continuing into the SC upstate by Sunday, undergoing further weakening.
"As Storm Helene clears, it will continue to be windy with some bright or sunny spells". Sustained winds slowed slightly to 125 miles per hour Tuesday afternoon, making it a Cat 3 storm. Expect winds to increase on Saturday to 15-30mph across the entire CSRA, with the 30mph more likely in the northern/eastern areas.
"A life-threatening storm surge is highly likely along portions of the coastline of SC and North Carolina, and a Storm Surge Warning is in effect for a portion of this area", the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center said up to 3 inches of rain could fall in Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
Tropical Storm Helene has sparked weather warnings across the Azores, the Portuguese islands located 1,000 miles off the west coast of continental Europe. Heavy rain and gusty winds would still impact the islands even if Isaac did fall apart.
"This storm is going to linger awhile", said George Gallagher of global analytics firm CoreLogic during an online event on Wednesday to assess the threat.
Behind Isaac, Hurricane Helene also continued to deliver good news.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 11 p.m. Tuesday update, Isaac has weakened somewhat in the previous 24 hours and is now expected to enter the Caribbean Thursday evening as a tropical storm, rather than a hurricane. Another system began forming near Hurricane Florence and was forecast at a 20 percent chance of formation over five days.
