Trump foresees no Democratic 'blue wave' coming

But he insisted the GOP is working toward introducing something in the next few weeks.

President Donald Trump's approval rating has improved with Americans - but voters still want Democrats to win in the 2018 midterm elections. Whitmer is poised to do well in bellwether Oakland, which also has two major congressional races, and Democrats are running female candidates in all eight legislative seats considered to be competitive there. It was also the year Democrats lost their Senate majority.

This could change on November 6, when the 435 seats in the House and one-third of those in the Senate (35) will be in play, along with numerous state and local positions.

Leaders are clear about what's not on the agenda: impeachment of Trump - at least until the outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and possible Trump campaign collusion with Moscow.

Democrats like Schiff, and fellow California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell, say they'll wait for Mueller to conclude his investigation before jumping into one of their own, but there are things they're convinced Mueller has missed and issues that may be relevant to a collusion probe that other investigations have ignored. The question is how many.

"Democrats have lots of opportunities in the House, but not really the Senate", said Kyle Kondik, managing editor of a nonpartisan political newsletter at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. "Not looking like a blue wave".

Yet women's preference for Democrats has more than doubled to 25 points.

Republicans have a large and expanding advantage on the economy.

"Both caucuses on the Democratic side should pick up seats this year". While the preferences of partisans have remained stable, shifts among independents have swung the last three midterm elections against the incumbent president's party.

During a stop at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Biden said that America has a chance to reset "the moral compass of this country" and that President Trump's actions at home and overseas didn't reflect basic American values of decency and pluralism. Republicans hold a 63-46 majority in the House, with one vacancy, and a 27-10 margin in the Senate, where one seat is empty. The same would apply for the Senate too, minus the speaker part, though the chances of Democrats retaking the Senate aren't great right now. To make matters worse, Republican attorneys general from 20 states, led by Texas, have asked a federal court to declare Obamacare unconstitutional, on a legal theory that practically defines chutzpah: The law is no longer viable without the individual mandate.

Even if Democrats are expected to pick up votes - especially in the residential suburbs where political centrists oppose numerous White House's policies - they still face a structural disadvantage.
