Shooting at Alabama shopping mall

Shooting at Galleria Mall in Birmingham

Alabama mall shooting suspect dead in pre-Black Friday incident, reports say

Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector revealed that one officer found the suspect, 'did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene'. He was later killed by a Hoover police officer. The officers were on the scene thanks to beefed up mall security for the holiday shopping spree, and may have prevented more violence since several bystanders were seen with guns likewise drawn. A 12-year-old girl was also hurt in the shooting, thought it's not clear at what point during the incident she was injured. However, she was in stable condition as of the morning of November 23.

The incident at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover began with a physical altercation between an 18-year-old and the 21-year-old gunman in the mall near the Footaction and JC Penney stores. The gunshot victim was later taken to UAB hospital in serious condition, according to police.

Rector said Hoover police always have a heavy presence at the Riverchase Galleria and other shopping areas in Hoover starting on Thanksgiving afternoon and continuing through the rest of the Christmas shopping season.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will investigate the officer involved shooting.
