The Republican-led Senate voted 55-44 on March 20 to delay action on the same resolution in order to give the Trump administration more time to try to bring the conflict in Yemen to a resolution.

Questions related to the extent of the U.S. role and what the USA intelligence knows about the Jamal Khashoggi murder were on lawmakers' minds ahead of the briefing.

But the director of the CIA Gina Haspel, the only Trump cabinet member who listened to the alleged audio of the killing in Istanbul, did not take part in the briefing.

Saudi Arabia this month said that it had transferred US$60 million to President Mahmoud Abbas' Palestine Authority, financially strapped as a result of the Trump administration cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in funding of the authority as well as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unwra) that supports Palestinian refugees.

The position of many senators changed after the president dismissed the intelligence community's assessment that Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman likely ordered the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "We discussed multiple aspects of India-Saudi Arabia relations and ways to further boost economic, cultural and energy ties".

The prime minister is set to hold a trilateral meeting with United States President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"If that doesn't constitute hostilities, I don't know what does", he said, becoming animated during his floor speech.

A Senate aide said Haspel is not scheduled to be involved in Wednesday's briefing, which will take place at 11 a.m. Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will both attend this week's G20 summit in Argentina.

"And if the briefing reinforces the conclusion that I have already tentatively formed, then there will be no business as usual with Saudi Arabia", he added.

"We are assisting them in targeting the areas in Yemen where they're going to drop their bombs", said Senator Richard Durbin, the No 2 Democrat leader in the Senate.

It is important for Canada to send a message and sideline the crown prince at the summit, said Bessma Momani, a senior fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation and a professor at the University of Waterloo specializing in Middle Eastern foreign policy.

The vote showed a significant number of Republicans were willing to break with Trump to express their deep dissatisfaction with Saudi Arabia and with the US response to Khashoggi's brutal killing in Turkey last month.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Wednesday that the worldwide body is "close to [creating] the conditions for the possibility for [Yemen] peace talks to start". "And in terms of our review of our own arms exports to Saudi Arabia", she said. Saudi Arabia remained indifferent to calls from the worldwide community, the increasing humanitarian price of the war and the fact that the battle would remain futile.

Warren's letters to the remaining five firms seek confirmation of reports that those companies have severed ties with the desert kingdom following Khashoggi's murder.

"In recent years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been a valuable partner".
