Kendrick Lamar, Drake & Cardi B Lead 2019 Grammy Nominations

Six of the eight 2019 nominees for Best New Artist are women.

Canadian superstar Drake emerged as one of the leading artists at the Grammy Awards nominations on Friday, picking up seven nods, many of them in key categories.

The soundtrack to the movie "Black Panther" received a nomination for Album Of The Year, making it just the thirteenth movie soundtrack to ever receive this nomination, People reported.

In 2017, his wife, Beyoncé received nine Grammy nominations, but when she only won best urban contemporary album and best music video, Adele asked during her acceptance speech, "What does Beyoncé have to do to win album of the year?".

Folk singer Brandi Carlile has bagged six nominations, while Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover's musical alter-ego) and Cardi B each have five.

After last year's show sparked a major backlash, the Recording Academy created a diversity task force responding to criticism that the show was consistently too male and too white, and ultimately expanded four of the top categories from five nominees to eight.

Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow was criticised earlier this year at the Grammys when he said women need to "step up" when asked about the lack of women in the top categories, which he later acknowledged was a "poor choice of words".

But women will also lead in a variety of categories this year. The pop singer, raised in Pickering, Ont., was named in two categories - song of the year for In My Blood and best pop vocal album.

Beyonce and Jay-Z, billed as The Carters, as well Ariana Grande, didn't earn any of the big nominations. Minaj completely shut out this year after the release of her last album, Queen.

Mac Miller, who died in September, earned a nomination for best rap album with "Swimming".

The Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS.
